Papaya is counted among the best fruits found in hot countries.  The fruit was brought to India by the Portuguese in the late sixteenth or early seventeenth centuries.  Its native land is the Mexico region of North America.  From Mexico, it gradually spread to other countries.

Papaya grows abundantly in the Philippine Islands and Cochin China.  From there, its seeds are exported to countries like India.  Since papaya seed is a foreign seed, it is not mentioned in the Ayurvedic texts of India due to its non-use in ancient times.

The papaya tree is usually 10 feet to 30 feet tall, and the leaves are like castor leaves.  The color of the bark is white and fruits are formed in the stem between the leaves.  The skin of the raw fruit is green and the pulp is white.  But when cooked, its skin becomes some saffron color.

The fruits look yellow and beautiful when ripe artificially.  But papaya ripe on the tree is good in taste.

The papaya tree grows very fast.  Starts giving fruits within a year.  Sometimes, the papaya tree gets so much fruit that the fear of breaking the tree arises.

In such a situation, it is best to break some of the raw fruits out of them.  The tree being soft and hollow from within, cannot bear much of the fruit load.

There are many varieties of papaya, which differ in size, shape, color, smell, and taste.  There is also a variety of them in which there is no seed.

There are mainly three species of papaya in India.  The first mountain papaya, which is usually in the hilly regions, from 6500 to 8000 feet.  It also tolerates sharp shocks running on the Nilgiri Mountains of Lanka and Southern India.

Trees of another species are 5–4 feet tall.  The papaya of the third caste is called kerika papaya in the Latin language.  It is a commonly found species.  Its trees are 10 feet tall.  These plants usually bear long or round fruits.

The cultivation of papaya in India is mostly in Bihar.  Their papaya is sown in 4000 hectares of land.  Apart from this, it is also grown in Assam, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Kerala, and Uttar Pradesh.

As a result, it is now a fact that today this fruit has gained enough popularity in our country.
